Special Olympics Club

The newly-established Special Olympics Club in the town hosts an Open evening this coming Tuesday May 4 at the Astro Active centre, Bellefield, at 7.30 p.m., at which the club will have its formal launch. All interested in supporting this worthy venture, especially in registering as an athlete, their parents or potential supporter/ volunteer is invited to attend.

Community policing

With a view of establishing a Neighbourhood Watch for Barleyfield and Fr. Cullen’s Terrace areas, a meeting of all interested will take place in St. Senan’s community centre this Thursday night April 29 at 8 p.m.everyone welcome.

Table Quiz

A table quiz in Holohan’s, Slaney Place, takes place this Friday night April 30 at 8 p.m. in support of Breast Cancer Research, with all funds raised going to the NBCRI. There will be good prizes for the winners, plus raffle on the night, followed by music by Two Tone. It’s €20 for table of four.

Car boot sale

This week-end (Sunday and Monday May 2 3) sees yet another car-boot sale in the local Showgrounds (9 a.m. 4 p.m.), and all funds raised going to Crumlin Children’s Hospital. All stalls welcome €20 per stall, €2 per car (kids admitted free). Special entertainment for the youngsters. Further details from Johnny O’Leary tel. 0877421096.

1500’s Schools Day

Next week sees the continuation of the marking of Enniscorthy 1500, the year that salutes a millennium and a half of the town’s existence. Tuesday May 11 will be a special event in the year-long celebrations, for that day has been designated Schools Day Celebration, in which all nine schools in the town unite to take part in a parade. Representatives of four post-primary, as well as St. Patrick’s Special School will be involved. The parade sets out from the car-park at Riverside Park Hotel at 10.30 a.m., led by the Samba drummers of the Vocational College, and progress up Castle Hill and through Church St. and Rafter St. into Market Sq., where they will partake in a gigantic and symbolic birthday cake. The general public is invited to view the spectacle.

Coffee time

* Monthly coffee morning in St. Aidan’s presbytery takes place this Friday morning after the 10 a.m. Mass, all welcome.

Jackpot winner

Congrats to Heidi Jordan, Bellefield Rd., who was the winner of the €12,200 jackpot in this week’s Rapp/Stars Lotto on Monday night.

PTAA invite

Members of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association (PTAA) in the area wishing to receive gold (50 years) or silver (25 years) pins/diplomas are asked to contact local organisers Mary Murphy (tel. 053-923559) or Joan Murphy (9235394) as soon as possible, so as to facilitate arrangements for 2010 presentations. Diplomas are for Pioneers who have been members for 40, 60 or 70 years.

Hazy Days celebrates

Ten years of a well-known enterprise in the area of looking after the bright young hopefuls in the pre-school sector will be celebrated this week-end when Hazy Dayz Childcare stages a 10th birthday celebration, to which all past and present pupils are invited to accompany their parents for the special occasion. It takes place at Hazy Days centre at ‘Cherryville’, Cherryorchard, this Saturday May 1 between 5 7 p.m. Those attending are invited to make a small donation to Barnardos, which would be appreciated at your discretion. Youth Choir

The newly-formed parish Youth Choir in St. Senan’s made its debut at the 10.30 a.m. Mass last week-end. Well done to all, especially leaders Theresa and Jamie. Membership is for those from 10 years upwards, and new members are all very welcome.

A little light music

The first A.G.M. of the local Silver Tones choral group for seniors was held last Wednesday. At present, the group is busily preparing for its first concert, to be held in St. Aidan’s Cathedral on Thursday May 27 next. This will be part of the Bealtaine Festival, organised by Age Action Ireland in celebration of creativity in older age.

Memorial unveiling

The official unveiling of the Edentubber Memorial at Irish St. takes place this Sunday May 2. A parade will assemble at Fairgreen, The Duffry, at 2.30 p.m. and march to the memorial site, where Dr. Ryan O’Donnell will give the main oration, and veteran republican Charlie Murphy, former OC of the Vinegar Hill brigade, will perform the unveiling.

Knock pilgrimage

Golf classic

Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club hosts a golf classic this Thursday April 29, jointly hosted with Enniscorthy Rugby Club. Cost for team of four is €250, and for further details contact Tom Hipwell at 087-8177521.

Next monthly meeting of the local group of Amnesty International takes place on Tuesday next May 4 in the IFA Centre, Mill Park Road. For those interested in campaigning for justice and human rights, Enniscorthy Amnesty invites you to drop into this meeting to learn more about its work at both local and international levels.

Astro Active on view

The local Chamber of Commerce hosts a networking event at the Astro Active sports centre, Bellefield, on Friday week May 7 (12.30 2.30 p.m.), during which CWCW CEO Trevor Jacob will give a presentation of the facility.

Uí Cinsealaigh

Members and friends in the Uí Cinsealaigh Historical Society are heading to Dublin for their latest outing this Wednesday April 28, taking in a tour of Dublin Castle.

Dyspraxia/DCD Support

The enterprising Athenæum Restoration Fund group has done it again. They are holding a Crafts exhibition later this month, featuring the work of various craftworkers, some very much a rarity on our modern age.

The spotlight will be on the work of the likes of the farrier, thatcher, coppersmith, pole-lathing, natural paint pigments, slating, mud brick making, pottery, dry-stone walling, stone carving, walking stick making, basket weaving wood carving etc.

The event takes place in the 1798 Interpretive Centre on the weekend of May 22 23 (10 a.m. 4.30 p.m. each day).
