It’s a family affair as Una shows that the ‘cap’ fits well
HER MOTHER was first, then her elder sister.
Now it falls to Una Leacy to captain the Wexford senior camogie squad. At only 21 years of age it is quite some recognition of this player’s capabilities that such distinction has been awarded to her having been nominated by her club, Oulart-The Ballagh.
She follows directly in the footsteps of her sister Mary, whose time with the arm-band saw her lead Wexford to All-Ireland and National League honours after considerable droughts in both cases.
But a few decades ago their equally well regarded mother Margaret (nee O’Leary) also led the camogie team with some flair.
Una didn’t expect to be the third member of this brilliant family to get the role. “I’m absolutely delighted, but it came as a shock, especially with Mary (my sister) and Ursula (Jacob) there.
It’s lovely to get it.”
Well her debut as leader ofthe-pack went well, as Wexford launched their defence of the Division 1 league title with a solid 217 to 0-5 win over Dublin at Monamolin on Sunday last. Una certainly wasn’t inhibited by her added responsibilities as she banged in 1-4.
“This team is full of leaders, so there are plenty of captains,” she acknowledges, while highlighting that it’s not her first-time to be a teamleader: “I’ve captained Colaiste Bríde (Enniscorthy) and the Oulart-The Ballagh Féile winning teams in the past, so thankfully I’m not a stranger to the role.”
Una is delighted with the work being done by the new selection team of JJ Doyle (Marshalstown), Tommy Roche (Marshalstown) and Joe Brennan (Naomh Éanna). “They’re good hurling-heads themselves,” she notes, while smiling: “JJ told me that he didn’t like running, and I told him I’m the same, especially at this time of year – I hate it.”
While retaining the league is an obvious goal, Una admits that: “The main focus will be the championship, and it’s great that this year the qualifying stages are being run off week after week just like in 2007 – when we won the All-Ireland.”
Those summer tests will be as follows: June 12th, home to Dublin; June 19th, home to Kilkenny; June 26th, away to Galway. July 3rd, home to Clare; July 10th, away to Tipperary; July 17th, away to Cork.
