And finally ...

For descendants and relatives locally of one of the forgotten soldiers involved, last week’s visit of President Mary McAleese to the Canakkale Monument to the Martyrs in Gallipoli had a special poignancy as it surely had for relatives today of more than 4,000 Irishmen who perished in the carnage of the Allies’ failed invasion of Turkey during the First World War.

One of those killed in action was Martin O’Connor, from Ashford, Co. Wicklow, a Sgt. in the South Lancashire Regt. He was killed on August 10 1915, aged 24 years. Like many others, he lies buried in an unknown grave in Gallipoli.

But though among ‘the most forgotten’, he is always remembered by nephews, nieces and others in the Enniscorthy area, whose lifelong dream is that, one day, they will visit Gallipoli.
