Teresa has last laugh by winning Musical award

A STAR turn in a specialist role on the amateur musical society scene has earned an Enniscorthy Musical Society trouper one of the most coveted awards on the national scene.

In the annual awards chosen from the multitude of top-class contenders in musical shows across the country, the outstanding performance of EMS’s Teresa Buckley in its recent production of ‘Hello Dolly!’ has earned her success in the prestigious annual Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) awards.

The award for ‘Best Comedienne’ was a fully-deserved prize for Teresa’s stand-out performance as ‘Dolly Levi’ in the local Society’s recent production of the well-known musical. While EMS has been nominated several times over the years, the last time it won an award was back in 1988, when Maria Clifford’s ‘Ado Annie’ role in ‘Oklahoma!’ was recognised.

The most recent AIMS nominations for Enniscorthy included for Set Design in ‘Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ in 2005 and for Stage Management category in 2008’s ‘’West Side Story.’

Teresa Buckley is a leading light with EMS, having first tasted life on the musical stage during her schooldays. She joined EMS in 1998, since when she has rendered memorable performances in shows like ‘Sweet Charity’, ‘Assassins’, ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘Oliver’, ‘Oklahoma!’ and its most recent ‘Hello Dolly!’.

This was actually Teresa’s third AIMS nomination for an award by the national body. Her first was ten years ago also in ‘Best Comedienne’ category, and also for the ‘Ado Annie’ role. She was also shortlisted last year following her unforgettable ‘Miss Hannigan’ in ‘Annie.’

With the ‘Dolly’ role in this year’s production, Teresa certainly brought the ‘meddling’ character to life, to the delight of audiences.

Well done to Teresa, and also to the ‘Hello Dolly!’ production team Ray Quigley (Director), Kevin Kennedy (musical director) and Ann-Marie Stafford (choreographer).

All in EMS and all who are well aware of Teresa’s stage talents join the congrats on a welldeserved honour for herself, her Society and her town.
