Youngest member of Keegan family dies in England
THE YOUNGEST member of one of Ireland’s best-known Republican families, the Keegans of Enniscorthy, has died in England.
Patrick Keegan, St. Alban’s, Hertfordshire, who was aged 68, was the youngest son of Patrick and Mary (May, née Roche, The Quay), formerly of Weafer Street and Irish Street.
The Keegan clan is steeped in Irish Nationalism, dating back to the days of deceased’s great grandfather, Pat, in the late 1800s, whose family was on one occasion evicted from their home in Lower Irish St. by the authorities because of their Nationalistic activities.
The family included brothers, Tom and George, the latter being Patrick’s grandfather.
The duo became Fenians and later members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, tracing their involvement in nationalist activity back to the 1860s.
Tom was interred in 1867 and later in 1916 when a Volunteer, spending some time in Stafford Jail after the Rising in Enniscorthy.
In those good old days in Enniscorthy, the Keegans of Irish Street made a living in the ancient trade of the cooper (barrel making).
Patrick Keegan was also brother of George, among five volunteers killed in an accidental bombing during the IRA’s Border campaign in 1957. Another brother, Tom, died in the USA in recent years, and his ashes were brought home for interment in the family grave in St. Mary’s in Enniscorthy.
Patrick, who emigrated in the 1950s while in his ‘teens, had been ailing for some time.
He died on July 17 in St. Alban’s City Hospital. Following funeral Mass in S.S. Alban and Stephen’s Church at Beaconsfield Road in St. Alban’s on Monday of this week, interment took place locally.
He is survived by his wife, Bernadette, a son, Niall, who lives in Limerick, and daughters, Niopha and Nuala, both in England; by his brother, Stephen, Summerhill, Enniscorthy, and sister, Mary Nolan, Ballybrennan, Bree; and by grandchildren, nephews and nieces and others relatives.
