Tesco case ‘none of our business’

THE ISSUE of Enniscorthy and the arrival of a Tesco store to the town just won’t go away.

At the July meeting of the Town Council, Cllr. Jackser Owens once again raised the matter, seeking a deputation from the council to meet management of the company for an update.

But Cathaoirleach Paddy Kavanagh said that Tesco had successfully applied for planning permission to the Co. Council, but had then been turned down by An Bord Pleanála.

“That’s the end of the matter and it’s none of this council’s business,” he said, adding that if the company wanted to come to Enniscorthy, it would be actively looking at an alternative site to the original (Blackstoops).

If there was anything they could do to facilitate it, they would. “If Tesco wants to come to Enniscorthy, they will, and I’m sure they’re not going to tell this council it’s their business.”

Cllr. Sean Doyle echoed the ‘none of our business’ sentiments. The creation of additional employment should Tesco eventually set up in Enniscorthy was mentioned by Cllr. Johnny Mythen, who said the council had supported the original bid, and they had no problem with the location involved.
