Plaque unveiling pays tribute to a true soccer icon
BORN IN Enniscorthy at the end of the 19th century, and going on to become a Soccer legend at club and international level, the great Billy Leacy will finally be honoured in his hometown.
The long-awaited plaque to commemorate his birth at the town’s Ross Road on September 24 1889 will be unveiled on Monday August 16 next at 12.15 p.m, as part of the FAI Soccer Roadshow and the national body’s A.G.M. in Wexford.
A reception will follow in the 1798 Centre, with special guests the Wexford team which won this year’s Oscar Traynor Trophy.
Lacey, a soccer idol of yesteryear, played for both Everton and Liverpool, winning cup and league titles with the latter.
He played for Ireland on numerous occasions. He died in May 1969.
