Location problem for Strawberry festival?
A MAJOR problem for Strawberry Festival in Enniscorthy could be the fact that it is spread at various locations around the town, and does not have one central focalpoint, a member of the Town Council is claiming.
According to Cllr. John O’Rourke, eight out of ten people he met at a national seminar on Tourism were more aware of the Dunbrody Festival in New Ross than they were about Strawberry Festival.
“Why is this?”, he asked at the July meeting of the Enniscorthy council, suggesting that the local authority in Ross, as opposed to their Enniscorthy counterparts, are ‘actively selling a package’ to attract outside visitors.
“One of the major gripes people have is that our festival is held at different venues in a town that has different elevations that it’s too spread out and not held in one communal area.”
Mentioning highlights of the Festival such as All-Ireland Farmers’ Market and the huge Marathon athletics event, the Chairman Cllr. Paddy Kavanagh also pointed out that the Ross festival had a budget of some €150,000, while it also had a Junior Minister (Minister of State Sean Connick) behind it.
The fact that the Enniscorthy By’pass project will in some ways return Abbey Square, the original home of the Festival, to the community was mentioned by Cllr. James Browne.
The meeting acknowledged a letter from the Festival organising committee, expressing gratitude to the council for its financial sponsorship and general support which, it said, went a long way in running the event.
