Revenue raid
LIFE IN a busy housing estate in Enniscorthy was dramatically interrupted last Thursday morning when Revenue and Customs’ officers and Gardaí descended on Moran Park, where they targeted a house containing suspected contraband goods.
In a joint operation involving local Gardaí and the State, The Echo has learned that a staggering 8,860 packets of John Player Blue cigarettes, along with over €13,000 in cash, and a small portion of tobacco were seized and taken away.
Neighbours and passersby were out on the street, which is part of a cul-de-sac, to witness the unfolding drama, after the officers arrived on the scene and entered the house around midmorning.
Revenue and Customs’ officers, backed-up by Gardaí, spent some time at the scene, and removed the suspected illegal goods and cash.
The items removed from the house were officially impounded and it has been confirmed that officials subsequently obtained detention orders from the courts in Dublin, enabling them to hold onto the seized items for examination for a period of up to three months. It has also been confirmed that no arrests were made, and that investigations are ongoing.
A spokesperson for the Revenue Commissioners confirmed some of the details of the operation, but declined to comment on suggestions that the individual house involved had been under any surveillance in the time leading up to the raid.
