Minister Seán Connick in running for Fianna Fáil party leadership
NEW ROSS-based TD Sean Connick is in the running to take over the leadership of the Fianna Fail party from Brian Cowen.
That’s according to one of the country’s leading bookmakers.
A glance at the website of Paddy Power’s Bookmakers under the politics section revealed that Min. Connick is included in the bookie’s top 12 most likely candidates to take over at the top of the Government party from the current leader.
Min. Connick is included at No. 12 on 100/1 odds.
Among the other candidates are party stalwarts including Micheál Martin [7/4], Dermot Ahern [7/4], Brian Lenihan [2/1], Mary Hanafin [18/1] and Mary Coughlan [33/1].
When contacted by the New Ross Echo about the matter, Min. Connick said he was not aware that his name was included in the list and he also expressed surprise at his inclusion.
“I am surprised that my name is in there alright,” he said.
“You see all these names and there I am in at the end,” he added. When asked if he had any intention of running for the party leadership, he said not at the moment.
“No, I won’t be running for the party leader’s position,” he said. Some of the party’s other TDs including Eamon O’Cuiv, Noel Dempsey, Pat Carey, Brendan Smith and Tony Killeen are also tipped by the bookies for the top spot.
