Communities to vie for ‘most beautiful’ title

THE 2010 KEEP Wexford Beautiful Competition was officially launched on Friday by Councillor Michael Kinsella, Chairperson of Wexford County Council.

Councillor Kinsella said that the aim of the competition is to encourage everyone to get involved in their local community and in doing so help keep Wexford beautiful.

“Keeping the county clean and well presented is a huge collective responsibility and the Council is indebted to all voluntary groups and individuals who help in achieving this aim. The competition is also about recognizing the huge voluntary work that is carried out by community groups, resident associations, youth groups and individuals who take action, large or small, to improve their local environment and help make their communities better places to live, work and visit. These groups are given well-deserved recognition for the pride they take in their locality at the Annual Environment Awards Ceremony,” Cllr. Kinsella said.

The overall winner in 2009 was Rosslare Development Association for Rosslare Village.

He said, over the years, people of all ages and from many divergent volunteer groups such as community, resident, development, youth and heritage preservation groups have participated in the competition.

The winners of the competition will be announced at the Annual Environment Awards Ceremony which will be held in November.

At last year’s ceremony 70 different groups, schools and individuals were awarded prizes which included trees, shrubs, daffodil bulbs and cash to fund development projects.

The Categories are: Best Environmentally Aware and Presented Housing Estate; Best Environmentally Aware and Presented Town or Village, Best Community Environment Initiative, Best Heritage, Preservation and Conservation Project, Best Community Coastal Management Initiative, Best New Entry and Best Environmental Improvement on Accessibility by a Community.

The category Best Environmental Improvement on Accessibility by a Community was introduced in last year’s competition and is one of the many steps to promote awareness so everyone can fully benefit and flourish in their community.

Cllr. Kinsella said that everyone should have the opportunity to fully participate within their community.

“The level of access and ease of movement through streets, parks, gardens and play areas is crucial to providing an inclusive community for all residents.”

The winning entry in the 2009 competition was Castlebridge Community Development for Castlebridge Village Green.

A DVD entitled ‘Access for All An Introductory DVD’, which highlights some key areas which will improve the level of access and ease of movement through streets, parks and gardens, is available from the Environment Section, Wexford County Council.

Applications are available from The Environment Section, Wexford County Council at (053) 9176619 Entry forms must be returned by Friday 13th August, 2010.
