Hospital situation to worsen - Twomey
AN AVERAGE of 25 sick patients have been treated on hospital trolleys at Wexford General Hospital (WGH) over the past few days.
Wexford General had the second highest number of patients on trolleys at one point.
Senator Liam Twomey said no improvement can be expected at WGH so long as the HSE keeps cutting funding to hospitals.
“They have closed the 21 beds we fought so hard to get and they are even texting us doctors now to tell us to keep patients away from hospital. We are actually getting worse than we ever were before I started in politics.”
Sen. Twomey said activists were making some progress, but the hospital is now going back to where it was 15 years ago.
“It’s a situation of complete turmoil and unpredictability. It looks like more beds are going to be closed and the beds that are closed won’t be used again. Along with this you have the threats to WGH. Doctors are growing more and more angry and frustrated that the budget is determining care rather than consideration of patients. It’s quite something to see 25 patients on trolleys in July. We will have deep trouble in winter.”
