Help ReHab

The annual churchgate collection in aid of ReHab takes place in the area this week-end, all support welcome.

Corpus Christi

This year’s annual Corpus Christi procession will be on Wednesday June 9 next, starting out from St. Senan’s parish church at 7.30 p.m. and concluding with prayers in St. Aidan’s cathedral. All are encouraged to take part, especially First Holy Communicants, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Special Patron Mass

Bishop Denis Brennan will be principal celebrant of this year’s annual Patron Mass in the old St. Senan’s church, Templeshannon, on Saturday June 26, an event that takes on special significance this year as it will form part of the Enniscorthy 1500 celebrations.

‘Harness tourist attractions’ call

A call has been made by a member of the local Town Council for a far more concerted effort by the community to exploit the potential of the many tourist attractions the locality can boast of.

According to Cllr. Pat Cody, Enniscorthy should lead the way by harnessing its best-known tourist attractions, and offer them as a package deal even for free to attract greater numbers of visitors, especially in the historic Enniscorthy 1500 year that’s in it.

He says, “Enniscorthy Castle, Vinegar Hill, the 1798 Centre and St. Aidan’s Cathedral are all jewels in their own right, but we are selling ourselves short and doing the town a great dis-service by not pushing them more as a combined group of symbols of the town’s history.”

The idea could be developed in several ways, he says, incorporating schools, organisations etc., and the spin-off could be massive. “It’s time we fought our own corner and keep the town firmly on the tourism map”, he said.

Michael seeks your support

Local youth Michael Denton, Andy Doyle Close, a 5th Year student in CBS, will be heading to Haiti as a Haven volunteer later this year, to take part in the humanitarian relief work.

The 18 year old Leaving Cert pupil has to raise €4,500 to take part, and you are asked to watch out for forthcoming fundraisers for his worthy efforts.

At the interval of this Wednesday night’s weekly bingo session in Bellefield GAA centre, a raffle will be held, while on Friday night the Castle Bar premises hosts a karaoke night. A 24-hour fast by Michael and supporters will be held at the end of the month.

And so does Lyndsey .....

Lyndsey O’Connor represents Enniscorthy CWCW in the St. Aidan’s Rose competition, all funds raised by the contenders going to the St. Aidan’s Millands Trust Fund charity in Gorey. She and other contenders are obliged to raise as much funding as they can, and Lyndsey is seeking public support for her upcoming fundraising events.

They start with a head shave and waxing night in Toss Kavanagh’s pub, Templeshannon, on Saturday week June 5, with music on the night also. July 10 next sees her stage an ‘Alternative Miss Wexford’ competition, a night for men to don their best frocks. A disco will be held on the night. More info, contact her at lyn0j50286@gmail.com

Bealtaine Festival

Bealtaine, the national celebration of creativity in older age, is having a big local participation to mark the event all this week.

St. John’s Community Hospital, its Day Care Centre and St. John’s Ward of Ely Hospital are presenting ‘Living the Dream without Fear’ in the 1798 Centre until this Friday 28th (11 a.m. 4 p.m. each day).

It features an exhibition of crafts, arts, music and drama all contributed by residents of the partipating groups, together with some local members of the Active Retirement Group and other individuals. Meanwhile, a special Variety Concert in St. Aidan’s Cathedral this Thursday night 27th is also part of Bealtaine.

Organised by the locally-based Silver Tones, a choir specifically for seniors, it starts at 8 p.m., with proceeds in aid of the cathedral’s spire repairs fund. Adm. €10.

Soprano Sally Kelly, bass Brian Murphy, the Vinegar Hill trad group and Omek String Quartet join the Silvers to provide the entertainment.

A talk on ‘Gardening for the Elderly’ will be given at Kilcannon Garden Centre this Saturday at 11 a.m., all welcome.

Coffee morning

St. Aidan’s Parish’s monthly coffee morning takes place this Friday in the presbytery immediately after the 10 a.m. Mass.

Tidy Towns

A welcome helping hand, literally, has been extended to the dedicated local Tidy Towns committee in the shape of Rod Guiney, Maurice Condon and pals from the local Rugby Club spending a few days cleaning up the area around picturesque Borodale, so often an area used as a dumping ground by the less civic-minded.

Some 35 individual volunteers took part, and the Tidy Towns pays tribute to this shining example. There’s also thanks to the Environment section of the Co.

Council and Declan Doran of Coillte who were also involved. And further congrats to the Residents Committee of Slaney View Park for its ongoing work in enhancing the appearance of this area of the town.
