Wine Food Fair

Enniscorthy Lions Club, in association with Next Door off-licence, present the second annual wine food fair this Thursday night in the Riverside Park Hotel at 7.30 p.m.

With a display of an exciting range of wines and local food produce, the event is the ultimate in a very pleasant night-out for all. And along with Next Door’s offering of wines from all corners of the globe, a dozen or so companies will be present to offer wine-tasting and advice.

Tickets are €20 each and, going on last year’s super effort, another entertaining evening is on the cards. Tickets available from Next Door, Cathedral St. (tel. 053-9238486), The Echo offices, Slaney Place (053-9233231) or the Lions Club (087-6993782), or they may be purchased on the door on the night. All proceeds go to local charities.

Education cut-backs meeting
A public meeting in town next week is expected to attract a huge turn-out, with the focus on the proposed Govt. Budget cutbacks in education, something which will have a massive impact on schools locally and, subsequently, on the community itself.

Organised by local TD Paul Kehoe and Fine Gael, it takes place in the Riverside Park Hotel next Monday night, November 17, at 8 p.m.

Special Masses
• Annual Mass for deceased members of staff of St. Senan’s Hospital will be held on Wednesday of next week Nov. 19 in the hospital chapel at 7.30 p.m., all welcome.

• Annual Mass for deceased members of all Pike groups (Cumann Picí ‘98 na h-Éireann) will be held in the ‘98 chapel in Oulart village this Friday night Nov. 14 at 8 p.m., and a good turn-out of local groups is anticipated.

Died in Germany
The death occurred recently in Germany, where he had lived for almost thirty years, of Mylie Cullen (63), formerly of no. 31, St. Aidan’s Villas. He was well-known as a Soccer referee prior to emigrating, and in Germany was involved in the music scene.

Mylie was in ill-health for some time, and interment took place last Wednesday in Germany. Chief mourners were his brother, Thomas, sister-in-law, Terri and niece, Tracy.

Book launch
The local launch of the Oylegate/Glenbrien parish publication ‘A look back in Time’ takes place at Enniscorthy Library on Thursday evening week Nov. 20 at 7.30 p.m. Already a best-seller, the book is produced by the parish Journal Society, with a big input from Oylegate Youth Club. All are welcome to attend the launch.

Meanwhile, the ‘Talking Pictures’ exhibition at the library at Lymington Road continues to attract huge interest. Featuring scenes from times past in the cathedral town, the event will run until Nov. 29 next, and, with some striking images, is well worth a visit. The library is open six days a week and all day Thursday until 8.30 p.m. tel. 0539236055.

Welcome, guys!
• There is a new addition to the O’Neill family of Ballinaslaney, Oylegate, with the recent arrival of Ardán, son of Dermot and Fran (née O’Brien, Bellefield Road). Ardán is younger brother of the more famous Lorcan (3) the young supermodel whose face adorns the packages of the Huggies’ ‘Night-Time’ pull-up potty-training pants. Congrats to all concerned come from all relatives, including those in the Middlesex area in England.

• Among those involved in the Christening ceremony in St. Aidan’s cathedral last week, one of the babies had a very special distinction his grandfather is a prominent local Independent politician. Ben Logan OwensO’Brien, three-month-old son of Eddie O’Brien and Jackie Owens, Moran Park, is the seventh grandson of Cllr. Jackser Owens and his wife, Lily.

Ben’s Godparents were Peter O’Brien and Caroline Owens, and also among the proud group of relatives present were Ben’s other grandparents Phillip and Sally, his other aunts Sarah and Emma O’Brien and Margaret and Paula Owens, and his uncle Peter O’Brien.

Welcome home
Neighbours and friends of John Kehoe, Loreto Village, extend a warm welcome home to him after his recent bout in hospital.

Rosary in St. Mary’s
November is the month for remembrance of those who have died, and a tradition observed locally in recent years is a communal rosary recital every Sunday at 3 p.m. in St. Mary’s cemetery (at Calvary depiction). All very welcome.

Complaints department
• A potentially lethal situation exists at Plummers Cross, Tomnalosset. The busy junction connects roads to Bree, Davidstown, St. John’s, and back to town, yet there is not even a ‘Yield’ sign in the area.

• A badly-in-need-of-pruning tree in Cathedral Street has resulted in the public street light being ‘blacked out’, though similar lights on each side remain clear. Residents are seeking the offending tree to be trimmed to allow greater light.

Joe is a winner
There was no jackpot winner in this week’s Rapps-Stars Lotto (nos. 14, 15, 21, 26), and only one match-3 well done to Joe Cash, c/o Liz Connick, who wins €300. Next week’s draw for €3,800 is in Doyle’s of The Still.

Silver Circle
The €150 prize in St. Aidan’s weekly silver circle draw was won by Ann Eivers; €75 winners were Ellen Gray, Borrmount, and Agnes Hendrick, 4 Cathedral St.; while €15 each went to Ed Tobin; Anna Mai Mahon, Slaney St.; Alan Caffrey; Eileen O’Brien, 22 Millbrook; and Shane Breen, 72 Moran Park.

Town Council briefs
Enniscorthy Town Council’s recent monthly meeting heard the story of a council tenant having to resort to live in a mobile home in the grounds of their home at Esmonde Road because of problems with central heating in the house.

Cllr. Sean Doyle said the heating system was not working properly, forcing the ‘freezing’ tenant to sleep in the caravan. An investigation was promised.

A re-location of poles is being sought for pedestrian lights at Abbey Sq., Cllr. Keith Doyle was informed, after he complained that they have still not been switched on. One of the lights had been damaged when struck by a vehicle. The meeting also heard of some street lighting in areas like Bellefield Road, St. Aidan’s Vls. and Seán Browne Crescent not working, while there are no public lights at the playground at Gimont Ave.

Many back lanes around the town are covered in overgrowth of grass etc. and require cleaning, while some protective barriers are also required to prevent illegal dumping (Cllr. S. Doyle).

And finally .....
The I-can-foresee it all now Dept. Like to catch a glimpse of what the future may/may not hold in store for you? A Mind, Body and Spirit Fair takes place in the Riverside Park Hotel this Sunday Nov. 16 between 11 a.m. 6 p.m., featuring a planetary of stargazers, mediums, numerologists, palmists, clairvoyants, card readers etc.
