Bunclody College celebrates students’ achievements
THE ACADEMIC, merit and sporting achievements of students in Bunclody Vocational College were celebrated at the school’s annual Awards Ceremony and Sports Day last Friday.
Following a Mass in which the whole school participated, officiated by Fr. Aidan Jones P.P., students gathered alongside invited guests from the Board of Management, Parents’ Council, Department of Education, members of the successful Wexford Camogie team and a large crowd of proud parents, for the awards ceremony. Clare McMahon, CEO of County Wexford VEC, spoke to the students about celebrating success and appreciating the extra opportunities that school offers.
Encouraging them to take part in every aspect of school life in order to find their hidden talents, she emphasised that school is not just about academic achievement.
Ms. McMahon wished the junior and leaving certificate students future success in their exams and life ahead. Sarah Rooney, who was awarded Overall Student of the Year, spoke on behalf of the Students’ Council.
She reflected on the range of activities and events undertaken during the year, noting that it was through such activities outside the classroom that students gained important qualities.
A popular choice for Student of the Year, Sarah was presented with her award to much applause.
Among the other major awards given were the Sports Personality of the Year award, presented to Paul Browne by Wexford Camogie players Mary Leacy and Deirdre Codd; the Bank of Ireland Junior Student of the Year presented to Frances Tobin, and the Michael Hegarty Perpetual Trophy for Woodwork presented to Katie McGannon.

Adopt A Highway The Americans call it ‘Adopt A Highway’. Here in Bunclody we call it a ‘Litter Pick’ or ‘Spring Clean’. Whichever you call it, all are asked to get out again sometime this weekend and clean the approach roads into Bunclody and Kilmyshal. Since this initiative was started by Bunclody Community Council in association with Bunclody Tidy Towns and the Active Retired Association, the entire area is looking so much cleaner and inviting. So we ask that the last weekend of each month residents will go out and pick litter off a stretch of roadway.
Contact Mick Kehoe 0868365265 or Pauline Burke to arrange to have the full bags of litter collected. People can meet at the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Bunclody, or the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Kilmyshal, at 10.00 a.m. Saturday May 31st, if you prefer to work in a group.
Clody Cycling Club
Last weekend saw Clody Cycling Club take part in the 100k Mt. Leinster challenge.
Through wind and rain they all managed to complete the gruelling circuit which took in Enniscorthy, Borris, Bagenalstown, Myshall and over the nine stones.
The previous weekend saw a small group of club members take part in the less gruelling Carlow Cycling Clubs annual outing.
But due to short notice the event was poorly attended by club members. Club members are presently preparing for our own annual June 100k outing when we hope to tour south of the county taking in Kilmore Quay.
The full itinerary will be published in the next few weeks.
As part preparation for this we continue to meet every Sunday and Wednesday evenings at 6.30 at Market Square, Bunclody.
Ballinapark Residents’ Association
At the recent community monthly clean up. Ballinapark Residents’ Association members picked up 16 bags of litter between Brady’s Cross and the Kildavin/Carnew junction. Matters were not helped by the fact that residents in the area are in the habit of leaving refuse bags at the bottom of Brady’s Hill.
Some of these bags sit for two weeks and are burst open by crows and rats with the result home refuse is scattered all over the area. Residents are reminded that refuse collection is on Tuesday mornings on alternate weeks and bags should be only left down the evening before or preferably the morning of the collection. Wexford County Council Community Warden is aware of the problem and is closely monitoring the situation.
