Murder charge brought after fatal assault
A MAN was remanded in custody when he appeared at last Wednesday’s Enniscorthy Court on a charge of murder, where he was further remanded in custody.
In a brief appearance dealt with early on at the sitting, Michael Furlong, of Apartment 5, Meadowfield, The Moyne, was formally charged with, on a date unknown between April 28 and 29 of last year (both dates inclusive) at apartments known at Carraig Tur, Enniscorthy, he murdered Patrick Connors, contrary to common law.
A plea of not guilty was entered. Sgt. Paul McCarthy gave evidence of arresting the accused at 6.30 p.m. the previous evening (Tuesday) and conveying him to Enniscorthy Garda Station, where he was later charged.
He told the court that Michael Furlong made no reply when charged, and was handed copies of the charge sheet.
An application was made by Sgt. McCarthy to amend the wording on the charge sheet, and this was granted by Judge Gerard Haughton. John O’Leary, solicitor, was for the accused. Legal aid on behalf of Mr. Furlong, was granted to Mr. O’Leary, who told the court his client was unemployed.
Ml. Furlong was remanded in custody to Cloverhill court in Dublin on January 24.
Members of the Furlong and Connors family were in court for the hearing, which lasted only a matter of minutes.
